New Easter Candy

Blasted! I focused on Kelson and I should have focused on the Nerds. I'm sorry their blurry, but doesn't Goose look nice. And yes, I know it's another food post, but I couldn't let this news go undetected. Nerds came out with a new Easter candy, Nerd Easter eggs. Trust me - just go buy three or four bags because when your children taste these they are going to be gone in a heartbeat. I found mine at Macey's in Logan. I know Walmart has them too. There ya go - one hot tip for all you candy nerds that haven't discovered this one yet!

Love is Light

Tonight I went over to my mom's to check on her, a thing I do now most everyday. It was late and as I stepped outside and into the cold, the snow was falling ever so lightly. The night was dark, there was no moon overhead, and no light in the sky as I climbed in the car.

As I pulled up in front of her old red brick home, the front path to her door was covered with snow. There was an ark light shinning behind me. The light brought the snow to life as each flake sparkled like glitter in it's luminous reflection. Light is always reflected.

Standing there at my mom's looking at the snow reminded me of something that happened in my photography class I took a few weeks ago. On the last day of our class my teacher Kelly told us to wear a white shirt when we take pictures. She herself had on a white shirt that day and I was taken back as she demonstrated this principle by stepping in front of our model, Shannon. Immediately the sun's reflection bounced off Kelly's white shirt and lit Shannon's face. I couldn't get over it. Again, standing there, I thought about how light is always reflected as I made my way up the walk.

As I got to the door, I fumbled with the key, but soon the door gave way. As I opened it and stepped inside I found my mom sitting in her chair crying. I felt so bad for her. Her knees ache, her body aches, her life is well spent and she suffers from many physical ailments. She has worked hard her whole life and her body shows the signs of having done so.

I doctored her up and sat with her a while, she likes the company. She is alone much of the time and just me being there perked her right up. She was so grateful that I came and she kept expressing her gratitude to me. She thinks she's a bother to care for but she's not at all. I have enjoyed my relationship with her in this time of her life and I am grateful I have the opportunity to serve her. My service to her brings me far more than it brings her.

As I prepared to leave I noticed the difference in the light in her face from when I first arrived to now as I kissed her good bye and made my way out the door. I was so glad I came to check on her. My visit brought her light. It brought me light too.

As I left the house, I shoveled the walk and fed the old gray cat. I swear that cat is older than my mother! It's body looks haggard and I'm sure, like my mother, it must feel haggard too. It's tail is crooked, it's a spindly thing, it looks like death walking on four legs. Note to self: I have got to remember to take a picture of that cat.

As I climbed in my car I turned to look at the old home. As I sat there pondering, I could see my small body standing on the front porch. I was a child again, and so many memories both good and bad came rushing to my heart. The tears came easily. . . the night felt dark again. I will miss my mother terribly when she is gone. I am her baby, and whatever will I do when the old home lies empty?

I drove away with my thoughts. When I got home and inside I came up to the study, pulled up this picture of Eden and commenced to unwind myself. Editing pictures calms me. I wanted to edit the picture of Eden and post it on the blog. What intrigues me about this photo, is the 'Catch light' in Eden's eyes. If you double click on the photo, it will come up larger and you can really see them. They are beautiful. I've been practicing the art of trying to catch this light in my pictures and I was so excited when I did so with Eden. I didn't have to edit her eyes one bit in this photo. I think that's what amazed me about the picture.

Catch light is a photography term used to describe either the specular highlight in a subject's eye from a light source, or the light source itself. They are also referred to as eye lights or Obies, a term coined after a woman with the last name of Obie, who always had her picture taken with light in her eyes. To me there is nothing more beautiful than a picture that captures this remarkable reflected light.

Every time I see a photo with this kind of light shinning from the subjects eyes I just can't stop looking at it. The ironic part of this is that I've noticed children always have more Obies than adults. The light is always profound in the eyes of a child. Well, why not? Children are always more loving than adults and love is light.

As I finished up the picture, I thought about how light is referred to in the scriptures. There are 314 scriptures that give reference to light in the Old Testament, 100 in the New Testament, 143 in the Book of Mormon, 102 in the Doctrine and Covenants, and 37 in the Pearl of Great Price. That's a grand total of 696 scriptural references teaching us about light. Where love is there is always light.

In Mathew chapter 6 verse 22 it states, "The light of the body is the eye: if therefore thine eye be single, thy whole body shall be full of light." I thought about the brilliant light in Eden's eye's. Her whole body is full of light. When she comes to my house she is like a little sunbeam bouncing everywhere. Watching her, I want to pick her up and squeeze her. I want to hold her in my arms and suck up all that light. It's like that with all of my grandchildren; they have that effect on me, because they love me unconditionally. Children are pure in their ability to love.

I thought about all that light in Eden as I sat with my thoughts and feelings tonight as I returned from my mom's. I looked up some scriptures on light, but the scripture that brought me comfort tonight as I looked through so many, was D&C 10:58 reminding me that Christ is my light. "I am the light which shineth in the darkness and the darkness comprehendeth it not." And when those things that are dark in me spring up covering my countenance with pain, filling me with hurt and discouragement, I am always lifted out of this place by the light of Christ.

I wonder about the light in my own eyes and tonight I was reminded to live so that the light of Christ can be my Catch light, my Obie. His love is my light. His love always lifts me from the darkest places. Love or Light, it doesn't matter, interchange the words as you will for they are one in the same and to love honestly is to fill my life with light.

Firsts'

So life is all about firsts right? I can't believe I actually asked a boy to go to Morp with me. SCARRY!

Mom and I were shopping in Hallmark next to the Blue Bird up in Logan and I spilled the beans that I was actually thinking of asking a boy to Morp. Since the Sophomore's are in charge of it and I'm a sophomore officer, I thought maybe I ought to actually go. Me and Aubs decided to be brave and each get a date.

I was trying to think up a cute way to ask when mom and I saw this crazy rabbit at Hallmark. When you press it's foot it bobs up and down, it's ears flip every direction, and it sings this hoppy song. Mom picked it up and said "Oh Des, you should get this and then write "I'd be so HOPPY if you'd go to Morp with me.

So we bought the rabbit and I made this cute poster and filled a bunch of Easter eggs with clues as to how to find my name. Then I made mom call his mom so we could hide them in his yard. It was actually pretty fun asking him.

Last night I heard the doorbell ring and when I opened up the door there was a CD and a note. It was my answer. I had to put this CD he had made in a CD player and listen to each track and do what it said. Then when I finally got to the answer, it was a poem he had written and the last part of it said, "Trying to think of something to Rhyme with yes is a mess, so instead I'll rhyme with No, I'm glad you ask, and I'd love to GO!"

Coolie Beans! I'm goin to Morp. Now if I can just keep my brothers from torturing him.

Biggest Loser Update (I've stopped counting the weeks.)

This is my latest find in the category deemed "Divine!" Little Debbie "Fancy Cakes." These tender petite little mouth watering cakes are creme filled giving them each 7.5 grams of fat. Another statistic worth remembering is that sugar and corn syrup are listed as the predominant key ingredients, there by making them 155 calories a piece, and by weight watcher standards that's 3.5 points.

Did I mention I bought the box yesterday and today they are all gone? The sad part of this equation is that I'm the only person I think who has been frequenting the box. So my comments for today's post regarding the biggest loser contest is, "You can all thank me for helping someone else win." I'm an emotional eater so welcome to 'me' not being the winner in four more weeks.

White Bean Chicken Chili

Thanks to Tessa at work, I've discovered a new recipe I absolutely love. White Bean Chicken Chile. It's simple to make and delicious. I guarantee your family will rave over it.

Start with 2 cans of canned chicken or cook up and shred four or five chicken breasts. In a nice big pan then add two cans of each, white navy beans, white cannelloni beans, and garbanzo beans. You don't need to drain them although I do some because I like my Chile a little thicker. Also add a can of Cream of Chicken soup, one can of green Chile enchilada sauce, one to two cans of chopped green chilies (mild or hot depending on your like) and then fill to the top with half and half. I like to add some chicken bullion but that is again your preference. I also like to add a big fat tablespoon of butter, especially when I'm in the biggest loser contest! Also don't forget to salt and pepper to taste. Now just bring up the temperature and cook it a bit. Be sure not to burn the bottom. Because of the half and half it scorches easily, so keep and eye on it.

Once the mixture is heated and close to being served add a couple of cups of shredded Monterrey jack cheese to the soup and stir it in. Then when you serve it, do so with a dollop of sour cream in each bowl along with more cheese sprinkled on top. Just a side note - if the Chile seems a little runny, I thicken it with some flour and milk ( like when you make gravy) right before I had the cheese.

I've served this twice now to my family and both times it was a big hit. It's now a Crow's Nest favorite!

Experimentation

This is just an experiment. In the event of a real crisis I'll tell you what channel to tune into.

For sometime I have had the biggest pet peeve with my blog. Maybe it's a universal problem that many bloggers share, I don't know? What I do know however, is that it bugs me.

Many of you probably thought I was raised in the dark ages, never having had any formal education in English 101. My sister Carol, the grammar debutant (an English teacher at Fremont) probably wants to give me class instruction. It won't help. I'm too far gone.

It's really not my fault. It's my template. I can never get my paragraphs to hold their lustrous form. So today I'm experimenting with my Html codes and a few other things. I might not be ultimately proficient at English and spelling, but I know my blogger stuff and if successful here today, those of you who were pulling your fingernails off every time you read a post, can now rest at ease.

I got Winston to help me out. Winston looks like a girl when he gets a haircut and that has nothing to do with paragraph structure or leading topic lines; it's just an observation. Thank you Winston for your inquisitive looks.

Now for the test. Hit publish, post, and pray.

Just a side note; Kelson informed me he got and "A" on his English paper yesterday. I corrected it for him so maybe I'm not doing to bad. There is the fact however, that Kaedell corrected it after I corrected it. Maybe I'd better re-think that comment.

Bless my soul - finally success at last. Now, I need to read my Strunk and White bible. I've had running paragraphs for so long I can't remember the rules.

Next battle - tab and indent!

Here's The Dirt

I was thinking today, there are certain tools in my life I just cannot do without. For some strange reason this triggered pondering about the pioneers and their meager wagons filled with a few sparse belongings. Well, if I were a Pioneer about to cross the planes, this item would have to be the first thing I put in my hand cart. Maybe that’s what made me shutter to think it probably hadn’t been invented yet and therefore I would have had to go without. I’m sure that’s why I told God I needed to wait and come to earth a little later. I would have never cut it as a pioneer; I simply could not live with out my Eureka Boss vacuum.

Roll your eyes and shake your head all you want, if you have never owned a Eureka Boss vacuum then you simply cannot relate to me! What planet do you live on?

I can thank my sister, the White Tornado’s blood daughter for the introduction. Just like my mother, my sister Nancy is the cleaning queen and she introduced me to my love affair with the Boss. Don’t you see, all us Blanch girls come from the loins of the "White Tornado" and our mother wrote the book on cleaning! So I knew my sister had found gold when she showed me this little awesome power tool.

Oh, even I had to learn things the hard way, I was foolish enough to think I could switch to another brand when my first little Boss wore itself right out. I still can’t believe I made the grave mistake of buying a different brand. Slap me silly, I used it twice and promptly gave it to the DI! That is one mistake I will never make again, and I’m here to tell you, if Eureka ever stops making this little world class wonder, I’ll shrivel up and die!

You can vacuum everything with this thing. There is never a day that goes by that I don’t use it. From sucking up crumbs and hairballs in a myriad of drawers to any floor in the house, it’s primo! I especially love it for my hardwood floors, not to mention stairs and baseboards. But it’s also a great pick-er-upper for the carpet when I don’t want to get out the big guns, not to mention how great it works on my kitchen rugs.

You only have one life to live, it’s your life, be a fool and never own one if you want, I’ll just say I told you so when your house doesn’t pass the white glove test!

Birthday Bash

Hurry up, take the family picture first.
Everyone loves this part (NOT). Kelson you are looking Macho.

Yes, it's another party. Next time I'm going to set up the tripod and get in the picture.

The occasion - A birthday celebration for Gav.

Missy informed me come July there will be 20 people in my family.
Looks like we're all done eating on china! I'm a paper plate woman now!

I couldn't believe it. I need a new family picture.
I need to add ten people to it. It's been a while with so many missions since we had a nice family photo taken.

I think I can safely say, there are going to be lots of parties and birthday celebrations at this house.

I might need to turn my shed into a party barn!

Anna loves to make silly sounds with her lips. She is getting so big.

Ali is definitely grandpa's girl. Anna is a mommies girl but she's warming up to grandpa.

Kelson got creative and drew Gavin a card. Card's are becoming quite the thing at the Crowther house. Looks like I'm going to have to go shopping early and get in the game.

Nice job Goose!

It was a fun night and the White Chicken Chile was a hit.
That Recipe is coming.

I love it when my whole family gathers.

Gavin loves it when he gets cool shoes for his birthday.

As usual, the party was terrific!

Happy Birthday Gav.

Thanks for giving us a reason to celebrate. We love you!

Man's Best Friend!

I think just about everyone in the town of Plain City knows our dog Bella. She is the friendliest dog and loves people. I have been noticing a new friend of hers. He comes every Tuesday to pick up our garbage. Yes, the garbage man is Bella's new friend. I happened to look out the window when he came one Tuesday in January and noticed that he was feeding Bella treats. I wondered if it was just something he did because she was out. So, I started watching every Tuesday. Sure enough, he gives her treats every week! I wonder how long this has been going on? Maybe they have been friends for a long time. Well, I decided to do a little experiment. One particular Tuesday (when our garbage really didn't need emptying), I told Kyle not to put the garbage can out. I wondered if Bella's friend would still stop to pet her and give her a treat. I was sure that he would just drive right on by when he saw that there was no garbage to pick up. I waited and when I heard him coming, I ran to the window to watch and see what he would do. Well, they must be good friends because he still stopped to see Bella. I was ready with my camera to capture the moment. I guess friends come in many different varieties!

Fun Sleepover!

Corbin has been begging me for a sleepover. When I asked him who he wanted to invite there was no hesitation in his answer--Ali. So, Ali came over on Wednesday and Corbin was in heaven! Someone fun to play with for a whole 24 hours! We went to the park and on a walk and they played out in the sandbox until the sun went down. After french toast for dinner, we made a big bed on the floor in Corbin's room and they went to sleep (after about an hour of talking and giggling). It was really fun having you come to our house Ali. Corbin is already talking about having another sleepover. And eden woke up this morning saying "Ali go?" Which means "where did Ali go?" You are one of Corbin's bestest friends!

Umbrell Updates

Look out! Anna is on the move and happy about it! She began crawling this month. She just can't wait to keep up with her brother and sisters!
Another first for Anna-boo, mashed potatoes yum! Yes, that is Craig's butter knife he is feeding her with. She was sitting on his lap and kept reaching for his plate so he gave her a taste. She will have no problem trying knew foods-the trick will be finding ones that she is not allergic to. We found out dairy is a no-go for her :(

Happy St. Patrick's Day! In honor of the green day we had Green Eggs and Ham for dinner. We read the book while we ate.

What!?

That's right! I thought I didn't want a dog until I laid eyes on this little one. I was introduced to this tiny breed and thought I would take a look on ksl.com just to see. Big mistake, with kids behind me, looking at the picture, naming her Browny, the want became bery strong. Several years ago Craig came up with this brilliant plan to split our state tax return between us. The money has been our fun money ever since. Well this year there was enough to purchase this little beauty. Wisest decision? No. Fun decision? Yes! Time will tell if she remains with us though, she is on a trial basis with this family. Just as we learned that Anna is allergic to dairy, she is showing signs on her skin that a dog might not be possible for this family. Craig has Grandma Sheila to thank for that one:) So, there you have it, what a fun month!

Biggest Loser Week 4 maybe 5 Good Grief! What week is it?

So, like an idiot, I started posting weekly updates on the contest we are having to lose weight.
At first I thought it would be motivational, now I've discovered it's just annoying.
Eden however, has the right idea of how I should stand on the scale.
Feet covering the numbers, Ya, I like it!

So I think we are all progressing about equally now. . . I think everyone is basically gaining weight. Chuckle, chuckle! Kelson said he's going to wait and spit in a cup the last week of the contest. According to him, if you go around spitting in a cup all day you can lose mass amounts of weight. Me, I'm going to run everyday the last week of the contest in a trash bag, all that plastic will contain my body heat and I'll sweat off all that extra poundage. Today, I really don't have a lot to say, other than, doesn't Eden look cute on the scale? Oh to be young again, back to the days before your vocabulary contained the word "weight!"

Rip Off Verses Good Deal

The other day I waited, ever so patiently behind six cars at Wendy's in the drive through. I was famished and couldn't wait to order a hamburger. I knew Wendy's was fast so I decided for fun I'd time them. It only took me six minutes before I drove off with my food. I was impressed. Wow, fast food doesn't get any faster.

Did I mention I eat at Wendy's quite frequently? Well I do and today I was not impressed.
Two Chicken Clubs + one med. fry = $11.57
Let me say it again, "I am not impressed."
I came home murmuring under my breath the entire way. In the first place, I'm sick of everyone hiking the price of food up claiming the increase in gas forced them to charge more. If that is true then why doesn't the price of food drop when the price of gas drops? Have you seen the size of cereal boxes lately? They're thinner now and shorter but they cost eighty cents more. Soon I'll be paying 9.95 for three Cheerios in a two inch box! I'm peeved!" Can you tell? I was so upset I even called up Kaedell and started complaining to her. "The dollar menu, mother!!!" she bolted at me. Kaedell is cheep and a coupon cutting fiend. From now on I'm taking her advice! I don't even love Chicken club sandwiches and for the grand price of eleven bucks I thought they should have at least thrown in another fry and two drinks.

Now let me introduce you to the find of a life time - VITO'S!
Kaedell and I have been taking a photography class in Bountiful from Kelly Anne Sansom who owns and operates "Gallery Photography."
Our last class we decided to ask Kelly if she knew of a good place to eat. Heck, Kelly knows everything there is to know about photography, so she's got to know a good place to eat, right?

She did! I just love Kelly, she is the funnest person ever. She directed us back behind her shop to a little stand called, "Vito's." Can I say once again, "What a find!" That's Vito in the window and he's from Italy. He told us his last name, which I can't even begin to spell or pronounce (La, something, something, something,) so I'll just tell you he's from Italy and leave it at that.

Kadie and I ordered the stake and cheese philly. I'm so mad I didn't take a picture of it, because if I had taken a picture, practicing my newly acquired photography skills, then you could actually see all that steak and cheese oozing from the sandwich. I know for certain a picture would have sent you immediately to your car so you could drive there and buy one. Don't worry when I tell you the price, you're going to get in your car and drive there anyway. This sandwich was twice the size of my Chicken Club and tasted a bazillion times better (it was divine.) Besides a cold drink from the cooler, it also came with any bag of chips you wanted and all for just five bucks. Besides having great food at a cheap price, Vito works on the honor system; you pay Vito by putting your cash in a cup and if you need change you make your own. He closes his stand at 2:00 pm. Kaedell and I arrived at 1:30 and he only had enough meat left to make three more subs. This guy sells out of everything so go early! I think he opens at noon. He's located in the parking lot there behind Kelly's studio. He puts out a few chairs and tables and I'm here to tell you it's quite the setting, I had fun just sitting there. He brings an entirely different ambiance to eating. Well, it was a fun way to have lunch, but now I have to figure out how to get Vito to move next door to Wendy's. I know, maybe I could get him to just set up his stand in their parking lot! Well, I can dream can't I? I'll close by saying, "Happy St. Patrichs Day!" Now go to Vito's and have lunch!

"A River Runs Through It"

You might think this story is about a book. There's no book in this story, no movie with Brad Pitt catching fish. This is a story about water and where it doesn't belong! Three weeks ago I really enjoyed the 66 degree weather until I got up the next morning and found a river running through my house. I have lived in my home 17 years and never once had a smidgen of water in the basement. So I was a little distressed when Glade frantically told me it was filling up with water.

The crazy part was it just wouldn't stop coming in. It wasn't long before the entire thing was a wadding pool. Thankfully it made it's way over to my drain next to the water heater. Seeing all that water pour down the drain made me sick all over.

Lots of my kids came to help. Seth, of course is always first on the scene. He drug all of my wet carpet pieces out the window and helped me move everything that was getting wet. He began shop vaccing, trying to suck the water up. He probably hauled two hundred gallons of water out the window until his back was hurting so bad we started dumping it down the drain. I know what you're thinking, "Why didn't we do that in the first place?" We are basically slow minded people, we like to do things the hard way first. I got on the phone and borrowed more shop vacs and soon Des, Goose, Emy, Kyle and Kadie were over to my house doing the same. As fast as we hauled it out more water just poured right back in.

Cute Stephenie who came all the way from Alaska to stay with us even got in on the action. I felt so bad, here we had a fun shopping excursion planned and instead we were sucking water non stop. She was a good sport though and pitched right in and helped.

Sucking water up and just having it come right back in a split second is futile.

Like I said, I'm a slow learner and after two days of shop vaccing I decided to stop and just go with the flow. Oh it was a painful decision to allow the water to just move on out of my house at a snails pace down the drain, but sucking all that water was just a waste of everyone's energy.

Human nature is a funny thing. Every person who walked in my basement could not resist the urge to pick up a shop vac and suck water thinking they could get it to leave. After any individual had sucked and dumped about 15 gallons of water, only to see it come right back again, the urge would leave them. I finally had to just stop people from going down the stairs to look. I had to laugh though, my grandkids had an entirely different take on the situation. To bad adults have to loose that fun loving optimistic perspective. Spencer was so excited when he saw the water. He was, like, "Grandma can we wade in your pool?" You should have seen the faces of all the other kids when they thought I had a pool in my basement. They all thought the water in my basement was better than a Happy Meal at McDonalds! For about five minutes I was the coolest grandma ever. They thought I had put the water there for fun. You should have seen the disappoint on their sad drawn out faces when not a single adult would allow them to go downstairs and romp in it. My grandkids are not stupid by any means though, it didn't take them five seconds to figure out that in order to get in the water you had to look like you were working in it. No problem! I've never seen kids so eager to help in my life. They scavenged up every squeegee they could find to look like they were moving the water to the drain. Ali was so excited she ask me if she could take her shoes off. I should have just told them all to bring their swim suits! I think come summer I'll just bring the hose in and flood the basement on purpose. Wouldn't my grandkids think that was a kick? Despite the grandkids glee however, the part that just drove me nutty was seeing water in my pantry. My pantry is finished and it pained me to see my painted walls just soaking up water.

Thankfully Chad came to the rescue again. I love my brother whom I acquired by marriage. I can always count on him for help. We decided to improve the french drain around our house so Chad brought over his backhoe. What a muddy mess. As you can see Seth is still on the forefront helping us and thankfully Gage came over to get in on the action too.

It's a good thing I have boys who are willing to help!

Chad made the mistake of showing Glade how to work the backhoe.

It's true, the only difference between men and boys is the size of their toys!
No Glade, I'm not buying you a backhoe for your birthday!

I must end this story by telling you after four agonizing days of water in my basement Scott Kohler came over and saved the day. Scott also got the privileged of sucking water out of his basement. . . his brand new basement that is finished with nice painted walls, pretty beds, cushy furniture, and plush carpet. He had to move everything, rip up all that carpet along with the pad and haul it all out of his house. I can't even imagine the work not to mention the disruption. He sucked 900 gallons of water alone just out of his pad. His saga with a nasty water filled basement beats my little puny story hands down. I'm just so glad I ran into him at McKalls wedding. He came over late that night and showed Glade the most remarkable trick to solving the problem for good. You'll have to see me in person to get the scoop on that little trick. After applying his notorius secret handed down to him by his grandpa, the water was gone in two hours. Now all you can hear in my basement is the fans blowing. I wanted to kiss him when I saw the last drop roll down the drain. I called Becci the next day and told her, "I'm in love with your husband." She said I could keep him. I told her one husband is too many and that I would just carry my secret love for him to my grave! Thanks Scott for being a super hero at our house and saving the day! A double thanks to Chad and my kids that all came over and worked so hard to help! Thankfully the river is gone and I appreciate all those who came to the rescue!
