The Heist

Just a few days before Christmas, Deserey decided to travel down to sin city with her girl friends and go dancing. Thievery is always on the rise before Christmas. All the news stations warn to take more precautions during this time of year. With Christmas right around the corner apparently there was a thug who thought he needed Deserey's purse worse than she did, so she got to experience thievery first hand.

It probably didn't help that three of the girls left their purses sitting where they could be seen. Deserey insisted she had been smart, hiding hers under the front seat. I told her it really didn't matter where she hid her purse when three other purses were sitting pompously in plain sight. I asked her with purses viewable, if she also made a sign and hung it above the car, you know, one that said, "Rob Me!" Because leaving purses on a car seat anywhere, let alone in the middle of a sketchy neighborhood, seemed to me like an open invitation for trouble.

When she called me at midnight with the bad news someone had smashed in the car window and stolen all their purses, making off with cell phones, four hundred dollars in cash and a plethora of credit cards, I could only think of one line from the number one video clip on You Tube. "You are so dumb, really really dumb!"

The sad fact of the matter is, it's a sad day when trust is a thing of the past. We live in a place where we don't experience crime in the same degree others do. And it's really sad when we have to lose the ability to trust. I grew up never having to lock anything. Times have changed.

Deserey was lucky. She only lost her purse and forty dollars. She did have to go through the hassle of replacing her drivers liscense, but thankfully she had her cell phone in her pocket and she doesn't pack much in her purse. Honestly the part that hurt the worst was experienceing the loss of trust first hand. Knowing we now live in a world where trust is a thing of the past, that is the really sad part.

Word to the wise. Don't leave your purse in the car!
